Unfolding a transmembrane helix dimer: A FRET study in mixed micelles

The exact nature of membrane protein folding and assembly is not understood in detail yet. Addition of SDS to a membrane protein dissolved in mild, non-polar detergent results in formation of mixed micelles and in subsequent denaturation of higher ordered membrane protein structures. The exact nature of this denaturation event is, however, enigmatic, and separation of an individual helix pair in mixed micelles has also not been reported yet. Competition between inter- and intra- molecular energy exchanges in a simple quantum model of a dimer

Abstract We propose a fully quantum model to describe the dynamics of a possible radiationless energy transfer process between identical and nearly localized molecules or monomers coupled through a dipole–dipole term. The system is studied as an environmentally isolated dimeric pair and we find that its dynamics exhibits a competition between the process ruling out the transfer of energy among different degrees of freedom of a given monomer and the one steering the intermolecular passage of excitations from a monomer to the other one. Synthesis and Spectroscopic Properties of Silica−Dye−Semiconductor Nanocrystal Hybrid Particles

We prepared silica-dye-nanocrystal hybrid particles and studied the energy transfer from semiconductor nanocrystals (= donor) to organic dye molecules (= acceptor). Multishell CdSe/CdS/ZnS semiconductor nanocrystals were adsorbed onto monodisperse Stöber silica particles with an outer silica shell of thickness 2-23 nm containing organic dye molecules (Texas Red). The thickness of this dye layer has a strong effect on the energy transfer efficiency, which is explained by the increase in the number of dye molecules homogeneously distributed within the silica shell, in combination with an enhanced surface adsorption of nanocrystals with increasing dye amount. Although the taxation in Romania is often criticized both by taxpayers and by specialists, there is a progress in taxation field as a result of actions taken in forming and managing fiscal revenues. Comparison of heart rate monitoring with indirect calorimetry for energy expenditure evaluation

Abstract Purpose The purpose of this study was to compare established methods with newly-developed methods for estimating the total energy expenditure (TEE). Methods The study subjects comprised 46 individuals, including 16 middle-aged men (mean age 51.4 years), 14 middle-aged women (mean age 49.9 years) and 16 young women (mean age 19.1 years). The TEE was estimated from 24-h heart rate (HR) data using newly-developed software (MoveSense HRAnalyzer 2011a, RC1, Suunto Oy, Vantaa, Finland), and was compared against the TEE determined using doubly labeled water (DLW). Minimum power losses by using droop coefficients regulation method with voltage and frequency constraints in islanded microgrids

In this paper, a droop coefficients regulation methodology is proposed for an islanded microgrid to optimize the power losses. Based on the P-f and Q-V relations to adjust the droop coefficients at every loading condition, the optimized operating set point generates minimum power losses operation while satisfying the constraints of voltage and frequency limitation. A 9-bus case study is here implemented to show the effectiveness of this new approach as well as the improved operation quality of the system.

Optimal power flow for technically feasible energy management systems in islanded microgrids

This paper presents a combined optimal energy and power flow management for islanded microgrids. The highest control level in this case will provide a feasible and optimized operating point around the economic optimum. In order to account for both unbalanced and balanced loads, the optimal power flow is carried out using a Glow-worm Swarm Optimizer.
